Fun at the Fair

Let me just say that this was a brave day for me as a MOM. Jeff was busy working so I made the oh-so- crazy decision to take the boys to our county fair without him. I was, however, with my sister and my 8 year old nephew so I knew I had back-up. We have the annual tradition of catching the Fair shuttle close to my sister's house and arriving at the fair via school bus. Well, I had bypassed this plan for the last couple of years for obvious reasons but this year something in me thought that the boys would enjoy riding on a school bus....AND they did!

Mommy and Blakey

Nico, Tia and my nephew making a weird face

They had this awesome butterfly exhibit for kids this year. You could go into an aviary-like enclosure and dip Q-tips into sugar water and walk around waiting for butterflies to land on your stick. They were very strict about not touching the butterflies. Hmm...how is this going to work with curious 2 year olds? But after a few close calls, they got the picture and we had a fun time finding and "catching" butterflies. This picture was taken when a HUGE one landed on Blakey's shoulder. He giggled as the antennae tickled his cheek.

Andrew, oh-so- serious

Its a little hard to tell, but both boys have a butterfly on their Q-tip.

MMMmmmmm, funnel cake....Blakey, of course, LOVED it...Nico, not so much (Blakey kept calling it "tunnel" cake)

Patiently waiting for the pig races to begin. They were getting very squirmy but once it all began, they were entertained but those cute little pork-chops

Front row seats

sorry, repeat....still can't figure out how to delete pictures once I have posted them! I need IT help!!

Our end of the night dessert....The boys had soft serve ice cream. They both enjoyed it but N finally pushed it away after I think he got too much cold in his mouth.....

So, we were brave and we took the boys on the ferris wheel. It was a little crazy, but I had a good handle on both of them. They absolutely, positively LOVED every second of it. In fact, we saw a ferris wheel in a book last week and Blakey kept asking for "ride, ride, ride". Sorry Honey, not today.

Somehow we managed to keep the boys happy at the fair well past their bed time. We got back on the bus and I assumed they would be asleep in a 2 minutes. Well, the only one asleep was Andrew. The excitement must have been too much for them........For their first true fair experience, it was awesome!

Easter in August

So the other day we were looking through old pictures and came across these ones:
Both from Easter 2010. (the boys look so tiny, don't they?!)

Well, right away Blakey started asking for "Fufu hats". (We call rabbits fufu's. You know, like Little Bunny Fufu. Just go with it.) The teacher in me pulled out the craft bin and......

TADA.....Easter in August!

Nico lost interest after a little while but Blakey wore his Fufu hat all the way through dinner. One ear, around the neck, didn't matter to him!

Oh these boys, these silly, silly boys!!

Excuse This House.....

My dad, who knows me and my daily life so well, gave me this plaque that reads:

"Excuse This House....
Some houses try to hide the fact
that children shelter there;
Our's boasts of it quite openly, the
signs are everywhere.
For smears are on the windows,
little smudges on the doors.
I should apologize I guess for
toys strewn on the floors.
But I sat down with the children
and we played and laughed and read,
And if the doorbell doesn't shine
their eyes will shine instead.
For when at times I'm forced to choose
the one job or the other,
I want to be a housewife,
but first I'll be a mother."

It's so true. Although at times I feel like it really isn't a choice. These boys are so good at creating more chaos in the house when you thought it really wasn't possible. Their intensity day in and day out is something to be reckoned with. I'll find things in the most random of places; from kitchen utensils under the couch to toy cars in the planters outside. The day is filled with "Look-a me, momma" as Nicolas finds any object that looks interesting enough to be part of his band. Blakey likes to create tunnels out of everything possible, from the couch cushions to his legos to the rocks in our yard.

This house is their museum and I guess that's okay with me.

So what's my excuse now?

Really I could come up with several.
Time is a funny thing in this house. It seems to pass so slowly some days but before you know it, it's July 17 and my babies are almost two and a half. I am full time mommy now that it's summer and my days are filled with play dates, trips to the library, museums and any other child friendly place that will keep us busy!! In between these outings, I spend my time interpreting toddler words, setting limits for two head-strong children, listening to "Nico turn" and/ or "Blakey turn", generally in unison, cleaning up spilled goldfish/yogurt/ milk and keeping Blakey from feeding our week's worth of groceries to the dogs. Quite a "vacation", wouldn't you say? :)

Our big news is that the boys are now in toddler beds. Let me just start by saying that this has been a REALLY HARD transition and, at times, made me rethink my decision to become a parent. I say that half-jokingly, but in all honesty, there were some rough days.

It all started back in May when Blakey could very easily climb in and out of his crib. We thought we had outsmarted him when we turned his crib around so that the low side was up against the wall. Well, that trick only lasted so long with that climbing monkey. Before we knew it, nap times were filled with Blakey climbing out of his crib and into Nico's, creating lots of chaos. I guess it goes without saying that there was NO sleeping anymore. What did that create? Tired, cranky boys and tired, cranky mom and dad. NOT a good combination. After a week or so of this, we decided it was time to take the plunge and buy toddler beds. Seems like an easy thing to purchase, right? Well, after nearly 3 hours on the phone one night with Babies R Us, Sears, JC Penney, 4 Targets, and EVEN Walmart (Yes, I was that desperate!), I finally found 2 wooden toddler beds with no pointy corners. If only this had been the hardest part of this transition....

I brought the beds home and Jeff put them together. The boys "helped" and it created a nice opportunity for us to talk to them about their new sleeping arrangements. Day one, bed time went off without a hitch. Wow, that was easy........Uh, yeah right!

I won't get into every detail, well maybe just a few.......
The next 3 weeks were crazy. Nap time would come along and the boys decided it was party time in their bedroom. One of us would go in several times to direct them to get back into their beds but to no avail. We were so worried about their safety that we took EVERYTHING out of their room. I mean everything. The only things that were left were the beds, blankets, pillows and a few books. Turns out the boys don't need no stinkin' toys to have fun.....hence, the partying behavior continued. Many days I would sit at the kitchen table right underneath their bedroom and I swore that any minute one of them was going to come crashing through the ceiling they were jumping so hard. They would rip down their black-out blinds, wrestle each other on the floor, and play other various toddler type games.

This whole situation created such an unhappy environment in our household. On the days that I was home with them, I would turn into grumpy mom and by the time 7:00 hit and they were in bed, I was so tired, I was nearly asleep myself. I guess the only benefit on these days was that they were sooooooooo tired come bedtime, that they would usually go right to sleep. On the days that I worked, I would come home to a grumpy husband who has been battling two boys for the last 2 hours versus getting work done. The boys would be cranky and clingy. Jeff would try to catch up on work and I would try to get dinner ready for these "darling" children. See the problem? Oh, I should also mention that the little saying that I heard all the time when they were babies "sleep breeds more sleep" is still true when they are toddlers. On the days that they didn't nap (which was about 80% of the time), they also woke up 1-2 times a night each. If you didn't see the problem before, I'm sure you can see it now!!!!

What to do? Give up on naps? NO, not at two years old. Give the children away? Tempting on some days, but no, not an option. I quickly realized that there was no "rewind" button in life and I had to tackle the task at hand. So, I emailed the mothers of multiples group and asked for advice on transitioning to toddler beds. If I had been wiser, I would have done this from the get-go but I'll just blame that one on the sleep deprivation.

I was so reassured when many MOMs replied that they had dealt with similar issues upon moving into toddler beds. Of course, there were the few and far-between replies of "oh, my twins had no problems sleeping in their beds." Um, yeah, thanks for the advice.
Anyways, many suggested separating them for nap times. Hmmm...what a thought! I guess any time that idea had crossed my mind before, I always worried that they wouldn't be able, emotionally, to sleep separated from the other one. Well, since they weren't sleeping anyway, it was worth a shot. The only problem was that our bedroom was the only available space for one to sleep in and it was definitely NOT toddler proofed. We now had their dresser in the room in addition to ours and bins of clothes that needed reorganizing/ etc. After spending a FULL three days, Jeff had the room ready to go. The two dressers were bolted to the wall, the TV strapped to the wall, the dresser drawers strapped closed with rachet straps, night stand drawers cleaned out, gate in the entryway to our bathroom, and black out window treatments on our windows.

So which boy do we "let" sleep in our bedroom? I struggled with this. I finally decided that Nicolas USUALLY has an easier time falling asleep and isn't as affected as much by changes in his routine. So we set up a "cozy bed" on the floor with his old changing table pad with a sheet over it, an ELMO sleeping bag, my old pregnancy pillow, and his blankets.

Day one of our new experiment. I took Nicolas upstairs first. I told him that he had a new bed for nap time. He seemed excited. We sang a few songs, kiss kiss, and I closed the door. I'm not kidding, he was asleep in five minutes maximum. Then I took Blake up to his room and followed the same routine. Blake was asleep in five minutes maximum. Are you kidding? I think I was seriously the happiest mom in the world that first day that they both napped. I felt like I had just won the hardest parenting match of all. Victory, sweet victory! They both slept almost 3 hours that first day.

So here we are, several weeks later and nap time is still a success on most days. Blakey usually asks for "Tuco" (his version of "Nico") and I give him the same answer every day, that he is sleeping somewhere else for nap time.

I think I almost have most of my sanity back.

In between all of the that craziness, the boys are developing into their own little people personalites. Blake is still loving his legos, cars and puzzles. I had to buy him some more challenging ones. No more of the easy one spot for one piece kind; he's doing the REAL kind of puzzles. Nicolas is obsessed with music. He LOVES listening to music, especially on my phone. He loves playing musical instruments and he can hear the strum of a guitar a mile away. He loves his music loud (problematic) and he even has to put his hand on the speaker to feel the vibration of the sound.

They are both enjoying learning their colors and shapes. Nicolas is esepcially good at counting to 10 in both english and spanish and Blake can identify circles and triangles all around the house.

Blake seems to enjoy humor. He laughs with us with and can pick up on a good joke fairly easily. They love watching the show Caillou and we even went to our first movie today, Winnie the Pooh. Amazingly, we were the only ones in the movie theater, which was fortunate as Nicolas used his "loud" voice several times. Overall, though, they enjoyed it.

I guess I should wrap up this post.........
It's summer and along with the early sunrise comes an early wake up call. Generally around 6:00. I keep telling myself that my children will eventually learn to sleep in....some day!

Hope you are all enyoing your summer!
hugs and kisses from us,
Rebeca

OMG!! We now have TWO TWO year olds in our house!

Believe it or not, the boys turned two years old as of 5:58 and 5:59 pm today. It's hard to really come to terms with the fact that we now have these "children" and our baby days are far behind us.

Everyone tells you that time goes by so fast when you are raising young children. And really it does. Trust me, there are days when Jeff and I are so exhausted by the task of keeping up with raising two very energetic toddlers that we can hear the clock in our heads counting down the minutes until bedtime. But after spending the last 2 hours downloading pictures onto my computer, I really am amazed by what has gone on here at our house, here in our lives, over the last two years.

We started off with these fragile little beings who were so dependent on us for EVERYTHING. I was joking with Jeff tonight about how hard it was for me after the c-section. The night they were born, all I could physically manage to do was push the trigger button on my morphine drip. There was no chance of me going to the NICU to see my babies. I felt so horrible that I couldn't be with them that first night of their lives. Someone should have told me, though, not to worry, I would be with them almost every waking (and sleeping) moment for a very, very long time. (of course, I probably wouldn't have appreciated the humor at that moment!)

So here we are February 5, 2011. We had a very lovely day today. We took the boys to a Chinese New Year celebration at our local library. They were quite entertained by the lion dancers. Nicolas, being the vocal little child that he is, talked his gibberish through most of the presentation. After that, we took the boys to their favorite restaurant for lunch. It's this cool place that sits right on the airport. We watched planes and helicopters flying all around. Blakey decided to make friends with everyone and anyone who would give him any attention. He lovingly gave one man behind us his half-eaten french fry and he told the little boy next to us all about his cars at home. (That's just a guess since he speaks in toddlerese.) The boys opened their first gift from our good friends David and Allison.

We rushed home for nap time and time for mom to make the CUPCAKES!!! Mmmm....

We sang, we skyped with family, we opened gifts and we went night-night!
All in all, a good day. All in all, a good life!
Enjoy the pictures and thank you for being a part of our lives!
Love,
Rebeca

***WARNING*** PICTURE OVERLOAD IS ABOUT TO TAKE PLACE*** (oh, and the pictures are not in chronological order. Just go with it. If they don't have a full set of teeth in the picture, it's an older one. If their hair is long, it's a newer one.)

Nico with his 2 candle. He is so picky he wouldn't even eat his cupcake!! (not even the frosting!)

Blakey had no problem enjoying his.

The boys made their own "choo choo" the other day.

LOVE that smile and laugh!

Big Boy. Look at those beautiful eyes!

Nicolas had a phase where he was so attached to his rain boots, he had to wear them ALL. THE. TIME.

Funny. Don't even know what to write.

He thought he was in his own spaceship.

On a hot day, I let Blakey go to town with a popsicle. He really ate the whole thing. Amazingly, all those stains came out of the shirt!

Nico also has a thing with shoes. He's wearing mine in the wagon and holding onto Jeff's at the same time.

OMG, are you kidding me?

Seriously, one of my most favorite pictures of Blakey, EVER!

A Day in the Life

It generally starts with a whine, a whimper, a screech in the monitor. Sometimes I get a "momma". The hour is always much earlier than I would like it to be.

As I open their bedroom door, I'm greeted with lots of smiles and cuddly hugs. Sometimes they tell me all about the dogs on their wallpaper in their toddlerese language. Nicolas pats my back and repeats over and over and over and over "momma, momma, momma". Blakey likes to snuggle in my arms as we walk down the stairs. Not a bad way to start your day, right?

We snuggle for a bit on the couch and before you know it, our day is in full swing. I try to prepare breakfast hoping that they will play nicely and independently while I attempt to create a healthy, yet appealing meal that will end up in their bellies and not on the ground, AKA the dogs' bellies. Nicolas races into the kitchen with a "momma, momma, momma" and he goes onto the counter to "help" me make breakfast. He gets pancake/ waffle batter all over me, the counter, himself, etc. Bella lingers in the background, waiting for something to come her way. Blakey can't wait for breakfast so he gets some cheerios in a little bowl. Before you know it, the cheerios are all over the floor. As you can see, mealtimes are so much fun at our house!

We eat, clean up and get dressed. Nicolas runs away from me as I try to get him dressed and Blakey insists on wearing his Elmo slippers "side, side" (outside in Blakey's toddlerese). We bundle up and head into the yard. See, we've been couped up in our house for the last 4 days in a row due to rain. I take control of the "caca" situation in the yard and dry off the climbing equipment. I come into the house to wash my hands and in comes Blakey behind me holding a dead mouse by the tail. What a treasure! I scream, he looks confused, and my mom wonders why I didn't take a picture of the whole scene. The next thing I know, Nicolas is bringing wet sand into the family room. Nice. And within ten minutes, they are both soaking wet!

And so it goes and goes and goes. We take walks. They fight staying in the wagon. They ask for water but they'll only drink if it's in the RIGHT cup. They ask for yogurt but only eat it if they can feed themselves.

Yes, my friends, we have chartered new waters. The independent, strong-willed, determined phase, I guess.

Luckily the day is sprinkled with drops of cuteness here and there. Blakey practicing new words with the sweetest of intonations while Nicolas rambles on and on about who knows what, saying "momma" about every fifth word. Giggling hysterically as I put special finger paints in their hands for the first time during bath time. Hearing a plane up above and watching their little fingers point up to the sky as they attempt to say "avion, avion". Listening to Blakey say "up, up, up" and then continue to get up onto our bed by himself where he jumps like the cutest monkey around. Watching them wrestle with their cousins. Really, the list could go on and on.

The day ends with a little Elmo, some more snuggles, some books and night-night kisses.

Sweet dreams, my boys. Sweet dreams.
